Sweater Weather Cookie

Today is September 22nd, 2020... which means it's officially the start of the FALL season! At this point, I've been ready for everything fall for a couple of weeks now. I've pulled out the sweaters, scarves, and stocked up on hot cocoa. The idea for this cookie came when I was decorating my house with all my fall décor. When I think of fall and decorating the house, sitting in my comfy warm sweater and a cup of tea or cocoa is what comes to mind. Although this cookie looks difficult, it's pretty simple once you break down the steps.

Materials needed:

~ Baked square shaped sugar cookies

~ Royal Icing

~ Gel food coloring - brown, copper, red, green, golden yellow

~ Thin tip edible marker

~ Scribe/toothpick

~ Round piping tip

~ Star piping tip

~ Piping bags

~ Piping coupler

~ Lemon Extract

~ Thin tip food safe brush

For this design, you need to mix the royal icing into medium consistency. You'll need more brown and red icing and less of the other colors. Set some royal icing in its original form on the side. The amount really depends on how many cookies you're decorating but you can always mix more! Put the mixed royal icing into separate piping bags with couplers and make sure to use small round piping tips. If you get any bubbling anywhere in the icing, use your scribe or toothpick to get rid of it.

Step 1

Once your square shaped sugar cookie is done baking, let it cool.

Step 2

Use the brown medium consistency icing and flood the entire cookie. I like to shake the cookie from side to side after placing all the icing to help it settle. Let the icing completely harden. This will take a few hours but I like to give it overnight and work on it the next day to ensure that the icing is completely dry.

Step 3

Next, take a small amount of lemon extract and brown gel food coloring and mix together. Use the small food safe paint brush and paint some vertical wood grain texture onto the cookie.

Step 4

Etch the design onto the cookie with your scribe or toothpick. I eyed this and since icing will be going on top, it doesn't need to be perfect and it doesn't need to cover the entire cookie. You can roughly follow my etch below.

Step 5

Using the white icing, pipe onto where the book shape is. Use the scribe to get the sharp corners by dragging some icing outwards.

Step 6

Pipe the red icing onto the cuff. Let dry for 10-15 minutes.

Step 7

While the cuffs are drying, use brown icing and pipe the hot cocoa in a circular shape.

Step 8

While the brown circle dries, fill in the sleeves with the red icing. At this point the brown circle should be set enough to pipe a yellow ring around it - being the edge of a circular mug. If you want to add some details, put a small dot of white on the ring of the mug while it is still wet. Use your scribe and run it through the white dot. It will give it a white streak making it look like there is light reflecting off the mug. Let dry 10-15 minutes.

Step 9

Use the copper icing and fill in the hands and let dry 10-15 minutes.

Step 10

Next, use the red and copper icing and add the outlines to the sweater and hands. This helps to make the hands and sweater a little more defined.

Step 11

Next, pipe some green underneath the book for the book cover. Use the edible marker and draw some lines onto the book for text. After, use the white royal icing in it's original form and use a star tip. Pipe onto the brown circle in a small swirl motion - this is the whip cream! Let completely dry.

Your simple sweater weather cookie is complete and SO cute!
